Saveh Rug History

Saveh is a city in the central province, 160 kilometers from Arak. This city is one of the ancient areas remaining from the Sassanid period. The history of carpet weaving in Arak and the surrounding areas dates back to about 150 years ago. The city of Saveh is home to a large population of Shahsavan nomads. Shahsavan means lovers of the king in Persian. This title was granted in the 17th century to nomads who defended the northeastern borders of Iran on the orders of the Shah.

Most of the Saveh rugs are woven by the Shahsavan nomads. The pomegranate gardens in Saveh are very famous, perhaps that is why the Shahsavan nomads based in this area use pomegranate fruit abundantly in their designs. You can see Shahsavan rugs here.
