What is a Farahan rug?

The finer examples of Farahan rugs(Ferahan rugs) were not produced at an investment level after the 1910s, and fine rugs became rare in the 19th and 20th centuries. The quality wool, excellent dyeing, and solid construction were the hallmarks of antique Farahan rugs. These characteristics made Farahan rugs the luxury rug of choice for European households. Antique Farahan rugs, especially if in excellent condition, are highly admired and sought after by collectors, but they are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Fine Farahan rugs are usually produced in two main designs. The first type is characterized by an overall design and pattern, such as the Herati pattern. In the Herati pattern, small fish are placed inside a large six-sided panel. The second type has a classic Iranian design, also called Farahan Sarouk. These designs feature an oval or diamond-shaped medallion. These designs were produced mainly for wealthy customers in the past. Medallioned carpets are derived from the tradition of Tabriz rugs, while palm trees and other symbols are reminiscent of the Sarouk carpet. Farahan rugs have fewer details than Kashan rugs or Isfahan rugs, but are similar in terms of elegance.
