Ahar Rugs History

Ahar was a small nomadic village in the northwestern part of Iran in the Tabriz and Karadagh regions, which has now become a city. The people of this city speak the Azeri language. In this mountainous region, like other regions of Iran, all men and women have the skill to weave beautiful carpets without using special technology. Rug weaving and animal husbandry are the main sources of income for families.

The city of Ahar is located near the city of Heriz. Ahar rugs are often woven in the style of Heriz carpets and are influenced by Tabriz rugs. As the demand for Heriz rugs grew in the late 20th century, the weaving of Ahar rugs also began. The medallions of old Ahar carpets were circular or oval compared to the medallions of the Heriz design. They also had larger motifs and elements. Verni is a type of kilim produced by the Ahar nomads. In terms of texture, materials, and patterns, it is similar to handmade rugs and kilims, but it is less ancient. Verni is woven from wool, cotton, and silk. This kilim is woven using the mental images of nomads and villagers, mainly in the Arasbaran and Ahar regions. Verni received the International Geographical Indication in 2019.
