Lachak Toranj Design

Lachak Toranj  or Medallion and corners design is one of the most popular carpet designs in Iran. The history of this design goes back to the 15th century AD and the Timurid period, but it reached the peak of fame in the Safavid period. During the Safavid era, carpet designers have spent a lot of innovation in the field of variety of Lachak Toranj designs, and this creativity in the designs shows their taste and interest in carpet weaving. This design is known as one of the most famous Iranian designs and has reached world fame. Lachak Toranj design with a pond in the middle that acts as the center of the design refers to the beauty of Iranian gardens. The corners of the carpet are made of four small basins, which are like lachaks. This design not only refers to Iranian gardens, but also represents the extraordinary architecture of these gardens.

The Toranj or medallion in the center of the rug acts as a focal point. To design the medallion, it starts from the center and different flowers and symbols are used in it. The medallion may appear in the form of a circle, polygon, oval, etc. in the middle of the carpet, each of the medallions refers to the area where the carpet is woven. For example, medallion, known as Sheikh Safi Ardabil carpet, has 16 corners. Lachak or corner is a design that is placed on the sides of the carpet and is usually in the shape of a quarter of a medallion  and is decorated with khatai flowers and stems.
